1. What does Finder Options do for me?
In recent versions of the Finder, there are quite a few hidden features. Finder Options, which is a control panel, enables those features. You need at least System 7.1 Pro, preferably System 7.5, and System 7.5.3 is recommended. Finder Options works fully under System 7.5.5, too.
Finder Options also allows you to control certain other things about the Finder. You need System 7.5 for this.
All this is done without any trap patches, so Finder Options will not slow your Mac down.
You can decide which Finder features to add, and which options to set, via Finder Options' easy-to-use control panel interface.
2. What features are revealed in the Finder by Finder Options?
Control-Drag to Make Aliases (Requires System 7.1 Pro) - If this is selected, you can control-drag icons in the Finder to make aliases, just as you would drag to move or option-drag to copy.
Reveal Original Item in File Menu (Requires System 7.5) - If this is selected, a Reveal Original item appears in the Finder's File menu. It does the same thing for aliases as the Reveal Original button in the Get Info box, but it's easier to use.
Command-Delete Moves to Trash (Requires System 7.5.3) - If this is selected, you can press Command-Delete to move the selected icons in the Finder to the trash.
3. What options can be set by Finder Options?
Disable Zoom Rects (Requires System 7.5) - I don't know why any sane person would want to do this, but you can check this to disable the Finder's zoom rectangles. It could speed the Finder up a little.
No Translucent Dragging (Requires System 7.5.3 and PowerPC) - Again, I don't know why anyone would do this, but you can disable the new PowerPC translucent Finder dragging that's used in System 7.5.3.
4. Is Finder Options freeware or what?
Yes, it is! But it's Copyright 1996 Rolf Braun, so don't sell it. Permission is hereby granted for the Info-Mac archives to include it on their CD-ROM. You can also put it on disks costing less than $5.
Finder Options is not PowerPC native, but it patches no traps, so it will not slow down your Power Mac. It has been tested on a Quadra 630, an LC 575, and two Power Mac 6100's.
5. Who are you, anyway, and how can I get in touch with you about this program?
I'm Rolf Braun. I'm new to the Mac scene at the moment, although I have been programming the Apple IIgs for years. Sassy Software is just a name, not a real company, and it's been around for about two years now.
